Timken Locator Bearing

Timken’s locator bearing is an alternative solution to address the performance, cost and efficiency issues associated with bearings commonly used in today’s wind turbine gearboxes.

The locator bearing combines a single-row tapered roller bearing with a secondary rib ring and is an ideal substitute for a cross locating single-row arrangement, a double-row arrangement or a combined four-point contact ball and cylindrical roller bearing.

This design requires less axial space, improves output shaft efficiency and enhances the performance of the wind turbine’s output system.

Design Attributes

  • Offers reduced axial space due to single-row configuration, which results in a narrower design that also decreases the required length and weight of the heavy gearbox housing.
  • Provides great adaptability to existing gearbox designs.
  • Allows for improved gear contact positioning due to the centering characteristic of the bearing operating within a 360° load zone.
  • 360° load zone reduces stress and increases bearing life.
  • More compact design offers reduced system cost.
  • Design optimizes race/roller contact angle to keep the bearing seated.
  • Smaller out flange is available on wither end of the outer race to prevent the possibility of reversing orientation during assembly.

Applications

  • Wind turbine gearbox high-speed output and intermediate shafts
